Shepard Fairey

American street artist and graphic designer Shepard Fairey is a strong activist on the streets. Emerging from the skateboarding scene and becoming a well known name with his "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" (OBEY) sticker campaign in 1989. This campaign featured an appropriated image of Andre the Giant which carried no reasoning other than for the viewer to search for meaning, which in turn would cause people to react accordingly - be it finding humour or questioning it's validity as an art form. The works brought an entirely new sociological meaning to an art scene which many previously only considered to be vandalism.

Shepard Fairey's OBEY slogan is now stated across many of his bold multi-disciplined works - often involving remarks on our culture, whilst featuring appropriated politically or socially charged imagery.
