Title: Terra Australis Nondum Cognita
Medium: Sculpture - cut book
Artwork size: 310mm x 25mm x 40mm

ARTIST STATEMENT ON THE WORK: "The unknown Southern which is the name given to Australia by Abraham Ortelius, the compiler of the first atlas, /Theatrum Orbis Terrarum', published in Antwerp in 1570. In 2012, I was a Creative Fellow at the State Library of Victoria, working with the maps and coastlines from this very atlas.
The map featured in this work is taken from James Cook's 'Map of Australia' originally published in London in the 1770s. I found this beautiful book, titled simply 'Australia' by Oswald Ziegler published in 1956, at the wonderful Book Heaven bookshop in Campbell's Creek; just outside Castlemaine.
The offcuts which have been tied together with French linen thread are meant to be displayed close by.
One would describe the work as a 'Cut Book'; simple, but to the point."
