Artist statement:

I interpreted the theme, Return to Beauty, in terms of resilience and cycles.  That is to say, the notion of beauty is meaningless without its counterpart - however you want to define it.

To return to something implies its absence and the requisite determination to bring it back.

The rubbish pile in the foreground has been a ubiquitous sight in my city (Asheville, NC) over the last year+ as we are still recovering from a generational storm and the resulting flooding. The pile is organized - cinderblocks to one side, bagged trash the other - in the manner of a systematic cleanup after a disaster as opposed to a derelict ruin.

The elk is also symbolic to my region. It was reintroduced to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the early 2000’s where they were once native and are now thriving again.

As with most of my work there is a cyclical aspect I try to impart; things ebb and flow, oscillating between beauty and destruction; non-permanent and not strictly linear but a repeating action. The title, 'Mountains', comes from this notion, as in mountains beyond mountains.
