A note from the artist:

'Deer IV' is one of the central works from my recent solo exhibition, ‘Sintila'. It was initially inspired by my memories of The Unicorn Rests in a Garden from The Unicorn Tapestries, which left a lasting impression on me as an art student visiting The Cloisters in New York.

From the back of the deer emerges the Tree of Life. Its newly formed antlers echo the tree branches that symbolize renewal, interconnectedness, and the continual cycle of growth. Suspended from its branches is a red bat, a traditional emblem of fortune. Because the words for “bat” and “blessing” are homophones in Chinese, the bat has long been associated with good luck, and when depicted upside down it signifies that blessings have arrived. The embossment also reveals five bats surrounding a sleeping face, representing the Five Blessings: longevity, wealth, health, virtue, and a peaceful passing.
