Note from the artist:

Shabu Shabu is a type of Japanese hotpot dish. Thin slices of beef and vegetables are very briefly passed through simmering broth, until they are quickly cooked to perfection. This dish is often eaten on special occasions, with friends and family, or when going out for a memorable meal. These two Shiba customers seem to be making their own special memories.

The larger caption says 'Shabu Shiba'.

The smaller caption is a parody of a famous verse by the poet Saigyo. The original poem reads:

みちのべにしみづながるるやなぎかげしばしとてこそたちどまりつれ

In the shade of a roadside willow, near a clear flowing stream I stopped,
for just a while, I thought...

Our version took a slightly different approach:
みちのべにしば犬ごのみのしやぶしやぶをしばしとてこそくひだふれつれ

At our favorite roadside shabu-shabu restaurant, we only intended to taste a little, but we ate until we dropped...
Anyone who's been to an all-you-can-eat shabu-shabu restaurant might have had a similar experience!
