Artist statement:

This painting is about turning our focus inward, returning to beauty by finding a world of splendor within ourselves, splendor that is rooted in our experiences, our memories and the way we have given meaning to the world around us. Allowing our inner self to be a safe haven allows us to return to beauty whenever we need it most. Placing this magnificent colorful creature in a setting that is stripped of most of its beauty (at least, seen in the conventional way), hopefully emphasizes this sentiment. But, if you look closely, you can also see that beauty still hides in the shadows, with new life (caterpillars) and life in bloom (butterflies), meeting in one space, waiting to be discovered.
