The term liminal describes a state, place or time which is on the threshold of change or transition. In the painting, the subject matter is suspended in a twilight landscape. Twilight is suggested in folklore as a time of day where the physical world meets the spiritual. Symbolically, that transition from day to night, indicates a time when all possibilities exist. Throughout the painting, there is a desire to emphasize the liminal space between stillness and movement; the wind blowing in her hair or the bugs crawling through the bouquet contrasted with the stillness of the light.
