Glenn Barr Solo Exhibition - "ELSEWHERE"We are proud to be hosting an impressive feature exhibition at our Melbourne gallery of hot new work from Detroit artist Glenn Barr.
Original oil paintings, pencil sketches, limited edition prints and some extra surprises.
JUNE/JULY, 2009Glenn’s work revolves around myths of the city. The dark side of city life – the laneways, clubs and secret interiors are the backdrop to his painterly world.
This world depicts a noir underbelly that parallels our own with reckless melodrama - from the cosmopolitan fringe of society, and the peripheral creatures that inhabit it.
As he says: “I think perhaps I'm a frustrated film director or set designer. I guess that’s why I create these scenarios in my paintings. Slices of fringe life. Life on the edge of "B" Culture where anything can happen from depicting loves tragic betrayals complete with epic monsters and surreal landscapes to creating my own urban mythology. Like many film directors, I like to envision a parallel world no matter how far fetched. If it's done right, it’s somehow believable and will completely takes you in.”
Glenn’s love of pulp genre aesthetic also creates a real mood and appeal. Over the top drama, dark mystery, painterly flesh and pop colours all draw fans to his work.
“I love pulp novels and magazine illustration - also Men’s Magazine illustrations mostly due to their exploitive and over the top images. The illustrators from the 1940’s-70’s had great fluid painting styles that typified the narrative aesthetic. I’ve always been a monster and horror fan too, which inevitably worked its wicked way into my subconscious and onto the canvas.”
